I guess I haven't really known bigfish (spelled one word!) for very long. Not much more than a few months surely.
But I've seen them play a lot in quite a short period of time, and now I’d like to think I’ve gotten to know Christian and Xavier pretty well; them and the whole big-fishy team, more than I can name. I hope I know them well enough now that I can judge their new EP as more than just a passing listener or local event-goer, but as a friend.
And I’m proud of them. The guys really killed it. Well-composed, with great production from Nolan Kiser. Really excellent stuff. Legitimately conjures the same feelings I have when I watch them play right in front of me. At beach bonfires, backyards, public parks, wedding venues, and wherever else.

“Over and Over and Over… Again” feels like to me, a fresh sound among the local LA scene, or at least the surrounding region of University Park.
bigfish is doing something different, and they’re much better off for it. This record is dynamic, well compiled, and really gives a holistic lens into what I’ve seen these guys up to in their performances, and in their own selves and personal growth.
bigfish is playful, but not without sincerity, tender even; a trend carried over from their prior discography. Their new record is funny in parts, and truly rocking in most, “Over and Over and Over Again” is more than worth a listen through.
So I think you should.

Brief Q&A with Christian and Xavier:
(they're hard to contact)
G: What’s with the ouroboros?
C: “Its like our characters (of the EP) are trapped in their sadness and self pity; or desire. Its like they never get what they want.”
G: uh huh
G: what’s the next big plan for bigfish?
X: "6+ minute song"
In the making of this blogpost, bigfish confided in me that one of their major hopes for the future was to quote: “hone in on a sound”.
This to me, feels misrepresentative of the guys and their music. I literally can’t imagine a more unique rock band currently making rounds in the USC diy ecosystem right now, and its all thanks to the charisma and distinctive songwriting skills of Christian and Xavier. They're well entrenched and really living their music. Student housing-core.
I’m excited to see what the guys have in the works next, with my highest on the list being their new midwest emo side-project “Dunk Contest”. The market is surely still under-saturated.
The release show for this EP, and Dunk Contest’s debut is being held at The Fishbowl on November 8th, 2025! Mark that, emo historians.
